The Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) is seeking a Geologist – In Situ Applications Approval to join its technical team. In this key role, you’ll support the responsible development of Alberta’s oil sands resources, ensuring projects meet the highest standards of safety, efficiency, and environmental stewardship.
You’ll collaborate with engineers, geoscientists, government officials, and industry representatives to review applications, identify geological risks, and recommend sustainable solutions.
This is a hybrid position, with flexible work options and the chance to influence regulatory decisions that shape the province’s energy landscape.
Key Responsibilities

Review and provide recommendations for geological components of in situ oil sands projects, enhanced recovery, disposal, and abandonment activities.

Draft project approvals with site-specific conditions to ensure compliance with Directives (e.g. 023, 054) and legislation such as the Oil Sands Conservation Act and Oil and Gas Conservation Act.

Conduct technical reviews and risk assessments to ensure safe and efficient project execution.

Act as a liaison with AER staff and industry representatives throughout the application review process.

Contribute to integrated decision-making and regulatory improvements based on field data and audit insights.

Support statements of concern, appeals, hearings, and alternative dispute resolution processes.
Qualifications & Skills

Bachelor of Science in Geology or Earth Sciences (Master’s preferred).

5–7 years of professional experience in geology or a related in situ sector.

Professional Geoscientist (P.Geo.) designation or eligibility with APEGA.

Knowledge of Alberta’s regulatory framework, energy legislation, and geological principles.

Proficiency with software such as Kingdom, AccuMap, and ArcGIS.

Excellent communication, project management, and analytical skills.

Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a hybrid environment.
