📢 The California Air Resources Board (CARB) is inviting applications for the position of Engineering Geologist (EG) in the Industrial Strategies Division (ISD), Carbon Management Branch. This is a unique opportunity to contribute your expertise to California’s groundbreaking efforts in carbon neutrality, climate action, and sustainable energy solutions.


🔎 About the Role

As an Engineering Geologist – Carbon Management Technologies, you will play a pivotal role in shaping California’s carbon dioxide removal (CDR) and carbon capture utilization and storage (CCUS) strategies.




Your responsibilities include:

  • Developing and proposing statewide regulations for CCUS/CDR projects.

  • Ensuring robust frameworks for monitoring, reporting, verification, and financial responsibility.

  • Reviewing the efficacy, safety, and viability of emerging CCUS and CDR technologies.

  • Supporting California’s AB 32 Scoping Plan, SB 905, and AB 1279 climate targets.

  • Collaborating with CARB divisions, CalEPA, industry, environmental organizations, and community groups.

This position is central to California’s fight against climate change and its mission to achieve carbon neutrality by 2045.

    • $6,488 – $7,735 (Range A)

    • $7,428 – $9,296 (Range B)

    • $9,142 – $11,449 (Range C)

    • $9,754 – $12,215 (Range D)

💡 New state candidates will be hired at the minimum of the classification range.


✅ Minimum & Desirable Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Degree in Geology, Engineering Geology, or a related field.

  • Strong foundation in geological sciences and understanding of CCUS, geology, or oil and gas operations.

Desirable Skills

  • Evaluating well integrity and subsurface storage requirements.

  • Assessing seismic hazards related to carbon storage projects.

  • Familiarity with CO₂ capture, transport, utilization, and storage technologies.

  • Strong team collaboration, leadership, and decision-making skills.




🏢 Working Conditions

  • Hybrid telework and office arrangement (Sacramento HQ).

  • Standard office environment with occasional travel (in-state/out-of-state).

  • May require in-person attendance for workshops, trainings, and meetings.
